Having a car provides a lot of freedom and convenience when traveling through Africa. You can travel at your own pace, stop frequently to take in the view, photos, and get to some places that are difficult to reach with public transportation. However, there are some things to know about renting a car in Uganda. Knowing these differences in advance can save you some money and maybe even a big travel headache.

Choosing a company name

Always book your rental car in advance. During the planning phase of the trip, you can choose one with the best price from the major companies. It takes extra time to price out five companies, but prices can vary widely depending on promotions and supply and demand, and it has been worth it to do this extra work in order to save money.

The factors that affect rental car price

There are some factors that determine price, such as the duration of the rental period and the size of the vehicle. But there may also be some factors that you are not aware of like manual and automatic vehicles, different pick up and drop off location which adds an extra fee. Another factor can be cross border fees, whereby some companies may charge you extra for driving their cars into certain countries.

You may not be permitted to drive into certain countries

Some companies may forbid you from driving into specific countries. However, these rules are always changing and can be very particular to certain rental companies.

Make sure you have an international drivers permit

When you go to pick up your car they will ask to see your confirmation number, driver’s license, and passport. And they could potentially ask to see your International Drivers Permit (IDP).

About filling the car with gas and return with the same level of tank

When you pick up your rental car, confirm from the company what type of “gas” you will need to add. There’s a very good chance that you will be adding diesel to your car, rather than unleaded or petrol. Return the car with a full tank of fuel, or topped up to the same level as supplied, to avoid paying a refueling service charge or a premium price per litre.

Inspect the car carefully before driving it off

Make sure to protect yourself from potential false damage claims by carefully looking over your car before taking it for a spin. Take photos and videos for every nick, scratch or dent. Narrow roads all over the Uganda are notorious for leaving cars a little banged up, so you’ll want to make sure you aren’t blamed for any dings left by previous renters.

Consider your vehicle requirements

Please consider your vehicle requirements because even your smallest available car may not suit your purposes. Consider the number of people and luggage to be carried. Comfort and safety are important considerations. You may also be grateful for having chosen an air-conditioned car in a hot country.

Check what the rate includes

Make sure you know exactly what the rate includes. Some prices are quoted by our competitors may be unbelievably cheap but there may be hidden extras you may not know.

Rent from a recognized brand

It is advisable to rent from a recognized car rental company, especially when abroad. They are more likely to offer the latest good cars, operate a wider network of locations, prepare vehicles to a higher standard and offer emergency roadside assistance. Also, if you do have a complaint, they are more likely to have a Uganda based office or point of contact.

Check the tyres

When starting you safari trip, it is very important to check that tyres are in good condition, have sufficient tread depth and appear properly inflated. Some customers breach the standard terms and conditions and drive their rental vehicles off-road. This can result in a cut or bulge in the side wall. And it is also worth checking the windscreen washers and wipers to ensure that they are not worn and that the washers have water in them.
